How this gpa calculator – weighted college works
GPA = Σ(grade-points × credits) ÷ Σ credits, on the standard 4.0 scale (A through D; this table excludes F and plus/minus-free systems — check your catalog if your school caps at A/B/C without minus steps). Pass/Fail and audit courses don't enter either side. The 'to reach 3.5' line is the honors/scholarship cliff that matters for Dean's List and many grad-program floors.
Frequently asked questions
How is college GPA calculated?
Each letter maps to quality points (A=4, A−=3.7, B+=3.3 … D=1.0), multiplied by the course's credit hours, summed and divided by total credits. A 4-credit A (+16 pts) swamps a 1-credit A+ (+4 pts) — credit weighting is why one lab course moves the number less than a full seminar.
Unweighted vs weighted — which does my school use?
Colleges report on a 4.0 unweighted scale (this tool). High schools 'weight' AP/IB at +1.0 so a 4.7 exists; convert to the 4.0 scale for the same result here. Grad schools recompute their own GPA from your transcript anyway.
Can a bad midterm term be saved?
The straight-A ceiling shows the math: 15 credits at 4.0 pulls a 3.1 cumulative over 60 credits to ~3.31. Deeper damage needs more terms — or the academic amnesty/repeat policies many registrars offer for one weak semester.
