How this final grade calculator works
The tool treats your grade as (completed-weight × current %) + (final-weight × final-score). Results above 100% are flagged impossible; the projected best/worst range shows what's actually at stake this semester. For multi-item finals (exam + project), add the weights together (e.g. 20% + 10% → 30). Some schools exclude the final from the 'current' calculation until grading — check your gradebook's formula before trusting the number.
Frequently asked questions
How does the required-score math work?
Required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With 84% now and a 25% final, needing 88% overall means (88 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 100%. Any result above 100% is mathematically impossible — your target ceiling is the 'best possible overall' shown.
Does this work for weighted letter grades (A=4.0)?
It works on percentage systems directly (Canvas/Schoology report %). For letter-only systems, convert the target to your school's percentage midpoint (A = 93, B = 83 typical). Professor curves and participation floors are outside the math.
I already passed — should I still take the final?
Run the 'score 0' number: if it keeps you above the pass threshold, skipping is arithmetically safe but rarely strategically smart — most syllabi also require the final's completion, and a 0 can trigger attendance penalties.
